What is happening: Google states that when your account reaches its storage limit you cannot send or receive email in Gmail, and that messages sent to you go back to the sender (support.google.com/mail/answer/6374270). You are not just out of space — mail is actively bouncing. That is why this is urgent rather than annoying.
Fix it in order. Stop when the mail flows.
1. Empty Trash and Spam — 10 seconds
Both folders count against your storage until you permanently clear them. A lot of people are over the line by a rounding error and this alone puts them back under. Do it before anything else, precisely because it feels too simple to be the answer.
2. Delete the giants — 2 minutes
Search larger:10M. You will get a short list carrying an absurd share of your quota — a handful of 20 MB photo emails outweigh thousands of newsletters. Delete them, then empty Trash again. Bytes, not messages: that is the whole insight.
3. Check whether it is even Gmail — 10 seconds
Open your Google storage breakdown. The 15 GB is shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos (one.google.com, checked July 2026). If Photos is the long bar, deleting email will not restore your mail delivery and you are about to waste an hour. Go clear photos or buy storage.
4. Give the number time — this is the one that fools people
After a large clear-out the storage figure lags. Delivery resumes when your real usage drops, not when the display updates. The classic failure here is redoing the entire delete because the bar had not refreshed, then panic-buying a plan. Empty Trash, walk away, come back.
5. Buy storage — genuinely, if the above did not do it
If you are over the line on things you actually want, stop cleaning and go pay Google. It is the fastest route from “bouncing” to “working” and you can always downgrade later once you have cleaned up properly. An outage is worse than a subscription. The part that is genuinely bad news
Messages that bounced while you were full are gone. They went back to their senders. Gmail does not queue them and does not retry once you free space. Nothing you do now retrieves them.
So once mail is flowing, it is worth telling anyone who might have written to you during the outage to resend. That includes anything automated — a job application confirmation or a password reset that bounced simply did not happen, and no amount of storage cleanup brings it back.
Stopping it happening again
