There is no Gmail storage. There never was. Your Google account has 15 GB shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos, and whichever one fills it stops the other two. This is the single most common misunderstanding in every storage thread, and it decides whether cleaning your inbox is worth doing at all.
The misunderstanding, stated exactly
People think of it as a Gmail quota with a Gmail number, and go looking for Gmail things to delete. But the allowance was never per-service: 15 GB shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos (per one.google.com, checked July 2026). One pool, three taps.
Which produces the sentence that shows up in these threads constantly, in a tone of genuine bewilderment: my Gmail says it is full but I have almost no emails. Both halves are true at once. The inbox is nearly empty. The account is full. Nothing is broken.

Why this costs people an entire evening

- They spend two hours deleting thousands of emails. It feels productive.
- The bar barely moves, because Photos was 80 percent of it the whole time.

The one upside of a shared pool
It cuts both ways, and this part is genuinely useful: space freed anywhere is space available everywhere. Clearing 3 GB of ancient attachments out of Gmail gives Photos 3 GB to back up into. There is no wall between them.
So if your usage is genuinely mixed, cleaning email is a legitimate way to buy headroom for a photo library you have no intention of deleting. It just has to be a real share of the total, not an afterthought — which brings you back to looking at the bar first.
What to do with this
Look before you delete. If Gmail is the load, the operator cheat-sheet is everything you need and it is free. If Photos is the load, Google One is probably your honest answer and no cleanup tool changes that arithmetic.
